What is Diatom?

• Diatoms are a major group of algae, and are among the most common types of phytoplankton. Diatoms are unicellular organisms. Other algae types are Blue Green Algae, Green Algae etc.
• Diatoms have a silica based body, unlike other algae such as Green Algae and Blue Green Algae which have cellulose bodies.
• A unique feature of diatom cells is that they are enclosed within a cell wall made of silica, so that they can do photosynthesis with minimum light.
• Diatoms are at the bottom of the food chain, which is consumed by Zooplankton & which inturn consumed by fish & other aqua animals which are higher in food chain.
• Diatoms are helpful organism unlike other complex algae like blue green algae or green algae which are nuisance to water bodies.
• A high diatom population will help exclude pathogenic species, such a vibrio and cyanobacteria and helps to moderate the daily oxygen cycle to create more consistent oxygen levels. This also results in more stable water chemistry.

• Fast growth with rapid replication. So, colonies of diatoms compete with other nuisance or pathogenic algae like Blue green or green algae.
• Increases the dissolve oxygen level by taking up CO2 & Releasing O2 through very efficient photosynthesis at minimal presence of sunlight also
